Basic NT1 question

Dear Friends, Does NT1 converts/conditions signal for transmission over POTS local = loop besides converting subscriber four wire to two wire ? Can someone clarify NT1 for me and point out URL for that. Thanks in advance Merry Christmas and Happy new year. Regards Naveen=20
