The default gateway has to be on the same subnet as the clients that use it, as you probably know. What is the default gateway? Is it a Cisco router? You could give it a secondary address on the new 192.168.40.0. network. Then use that address for the clients on the 192.168.40.0 subnet as thei

If you do decide to use secondaries with DHCP, be forewarned that some strange behavior can occur with ip helpers. It's been a few years since I've done it, but I seem to remember that a secondary will not forward (help) the broadcast from the client when it's trying to obtain it's IP address. C
