While on my quest for "building a home lab" I've come across some really
good deals while searching, and this weekend I got ahold of a lightstream
100 for a song. It didn't come with any cables, and I'm having to rewire a
connector for the correct pinout to test it via the console port. (found a
link at
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/atm/a100/ls100_ug/81260.htm#
xtocid77411 that explained the pinouts). It powers up fine, looks clean as a
whistle (no dust around fans!), and has three fddi cards and 1 t3 card in
it.

So.... I have a couple of 4000's that have a spare module port, but I'm
unclear if I can simulate an ATM connection with FDDI modules on the 4000's
(I know that I need a 4500 or 4700 to use the ATM modules). I'm trying to do
this on the cheap, so my first question: Is this even a solution?

For my second question, I have a little background first...
I have 2 2503's, 2 4000M's (with 4 port + token on one, 2port + token on
other), and a upgraded 3102... But no switches or no terminal server (which
I would like to acquire so I'm able to study from work). I'm currently in a
help desk position where I get no hands on exp with routers other than
pinging them and saying "Yup, that's down, let me transfer a ticket to..."
so i'm wondering if selling/trading this for a switch might be better in the
long run. (completed CCNA, and I've already scheduled BCRAN in a few weeks,
which will be my first CCNP test)

So, if you were in this situation, would you go for keeping the lightstream
around until you need it for CCIE level study time and just use something
like the cisco switch simulator for passing BCMSN (saving buying switches
for later CCIE level studies), or would you sell the lightstream, get at
least your first switch now, and just rent time on racks later to work on
your ATM knowledge?

-chris, slightly bewildered with all the options

(btw, i'm in Madison, WI if there's any other people out there currently
studying who might want to get together sometime and pool our lab
resources...)
