The original poster made comment that one must have both.  Case in point-  I
have attained the CCNP certification & my CCNA is due to expire in the next
year.  My CCNA status did not update when I completed the CCNP, it's still
the old CCNA 1.0 from 1999.  When my CCNA expires, it expires...

I guess we agree :o)
