Just to add a bit to the valuable comments above,
its just like connecting 2 different networks, ie ,a subnet is a different
network, so to connect 2 subnets you must use a L3 device.

Yes that is true. A layer 3 device is needed to route between subnets.

for your switch. Routing is required whenever you need to communicate
between different subnets.
