The TCP option is used on every session establishment, by the way. In each 
SYN, the station specifies its maximum segment size. It uses the options 
field for this.

The other side shouldn't send any segments (packets) bigger than the 
maximum segment size specified by its partner. After the SYNs, they don't 
specify this any more. They do specify the window size, but that's part of 
the 20-byte header.

IP options, on the other hand, aren't used much.
