you are right. only especific NICS will support this feature.
i don't know about ANY company that is suing this technology. I can remember
that it is based in an MAGIC (it's the real name...) ethernet packet
destined to yopur MAC Address.

Does the NIC have to support it:
Yes. It requires a 3 wire Wake-On-Lan connector on the motherboard and NIC.
Additionally, it normally requires an ATX motherboard that supplies
trickle current to the PCI bus when the PC is off.
Is it a handy thing to have?

The NIC and mb must both support the WOL feature to use it. It seems with
the newer version (PCI 2.2), you don't need to use a cable, but with earlier
PCI versions, you do.
I've known people who claimed to use it for software distribution off hours
and weekends, but I've never actually used it
