I use rancid to log onto my routers every 12 hours and automatically
download and archive any configuration changes.
Rancid uses CVS to manage and track changes to configuration files, (which
is fronted via a secure CVSWEB application for easy access by the
engineers), furthermore it
Well we have a couple of things.
1) CiscoWorks 2K. It will track configs for several revisions letting you do
a side by side comparison.
2) a grunt. The lowest guy on the pole has to telnet to all our routers (
120 or so ) and save the configs to their respective directory.
This is done about
TFTP and expect scripts. Take a look at Kiwi Cat
tools(http://www.kiwisyslog.com/info_cattools.htm. Another one to look
at is a perl script called mRat(don't have the link).

We use CatTools from Kiwi Systems. When it works, CW2k sometimes backs
up configs, but it's spotty. (this is mostly due to how it was set up by
the guy who admins our cw2k deployment).
On our voip gateways, the configs are backed up manually any time a
change is made, since config changes occur
