That's just a show version. And it does NOT tell you the serial number. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, January 12, 2001 1:06 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Router Serial Number try sho hardware ""Jake"

Hi It depends... I have never seen a chassis serial number in the IOS, however some of the higher end routers you can see the serial by using a show controller xxx. The serial number for the router is on a sticker on the "back" of the router, it has a bar code printed above/beloew it. HTH John

My suggestion to people is to set the snmp chassis-id variable to the serial number whenever you first touch a new router. -- Jason Roysdon, CCNP/CCDP, MCSE, CNA, Network+, A+ List email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage: http://jason.artoo.net/ Cisco resources: http://r2cisco.artoo.net/ ""John Hardm

Something we do in our network seems to work well, when you install a new router configure the 'snmp-server chassis-id' command to reflect the serial number of the router. Chris M. --- John Hardman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hi > > It depends... I have never seen a chassis serial > number in

Jake: show diag gives some serial numbers, but it's not supported under all IOS's (11.3 and higher, maybe?). Here's some sample output from a 3660 (Running 12.0(something)) xxx3660-1#show diag 3660 Chassis type: ENTERPRISE c3600 Backplane EEPROM: Hardware Revision: 1.0

I think it's also heavily dependant on the hardware as well. My 3640 running 12.0(6) only returns the hardware info on the modules installed (including those modules' serial numbers). Most low-end routers don't give this info. Fortunately, most switches do (nice for fast inventory). -- Jason R
