Every LAN segment in the network has a designated bridge. The designated bridge is the bridge on that LAN segment which advertises the lowest path cost to the root bridge. Only the deginated bridge is allowed to forward non-BPDU frames to other LAN segments. Hawthorne, Mike MM 08/21/01

To prevent loops, only one switch/bridge on each LAN/VLAN segment is elected to be the designated bridge/switch, and it usually has the best route to the root bridge/switch. More detailed information can be found here: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/5.html Hth, Ole
