If you're using the same VLAN it is the equivalent of connecting the devices to a layer 2 switch, or a hub (nearly- contemplated deleting hub, but sod it). If you are using separate VLANS it is equivalent to connecting the devices to separate ethernet interfaces of a router. Using one VLAN, devices will still see broadcast traffic though.
