For instance, when a loopback interface is used on a router using OSPF, the highest number IP address on a loopback interface is used as the Router ID. If the Router ID was on a physical interface and that interface failed, the OSPF process could experience a Router ID change. If the router has a new Router ID, the other routers will treat it as a new and different router. This result would be that all OSPF routers affected would have inaccurate information in their topological database.
