Another trick, which is not in the "Console Server" thread because I do
not consider it production quality, is to hang a bunch of USB to Serial
converters off an old USB 1.x hub plugged into a netbook or other junk
computer running Linux. Serial works great using minicom (the Linux

Using routers, on the cheap, I've mostly used and would recommend a 2600 router
with NM32A and octal cables. However the modules can be a little pricey for a
home lab.
If you want something really cheap then look for 2511 (iirc), but in my
