3.3 systems do not require -lc_r
3.1 systems do
patches and ports attached for 3.1, and 3.3
I have not tested the 3.3 port or patchbut
Just got it (20030522) running with threads on OpenBSD 3.1. I need to
do more testing, and get it running on 3.3.
Patch coming soon...

I could give you access to my OpenBSD dev-box if you like (just for
trying things out for compiling). It's only a pentium 75, so you can't
use it to stress test :)
