I think the more places on which we can use the same initial
configuration mechanism the better. If cloud-init can abstract out
the difference between AWS and Google such that I can create a single
image that will work correctly in both places, that seems awesome.

Having console output on the virtual serial port is great because it
becomes accessible via the api (or via "nova console-log"), whereas on
the VNC console it's basically discarded.

ed needed to run those programs.
And as a side benefit, a dedicated system-python that was separate
from /usr/bin/python would also help prevent the "help I upgraded
python and broke my entire system" problem that often crops up.
