Recently, I attended a presentation by a Chinese Dr. (A Harvard med
school graduate) in which he described some of the stem cell research
programs at one of China's leading medical schools in Shanghai. I was
blown away by the extent of the research, almost none of which gets
published for western consumption. (He explained that the Publish or
Perish mentality doesn't exist in China.)

Stem cell research in China apparently got its original boost because
the Chinese have no ethical problems re embryo stem cells, and it was
seen as an area that they could develop with relatively little
competition from the US and other western countries. That said, the
focus of the research there has now drifted away from embryonic stem
cell research to adult stem cell research, which they have found to be
much more productive.

It was almost hard to believe the results that the presenter showed.
For example, he showed photos of monkeys that had entire limbs
regenerated. Impossible to tell if they were phonies, but the Dr.
seemed legitimate enough. (He is practicing in the US and is
affiliated with a local medical research clinic, the Weil Institute.)

Anybody out there have any additional light to shed on this topic?
