That is my thought also. After running this autopilot for a couple of
years. When I bought it the Raymarine dealer told me that it wasn't required.
Guess I'll have to find a place to mount one. Not an easy chore on the
Landfall.

Without the rudder position indicator the auto pilot is flying blind. It does
not have a key component that allows them to do their job well.

Inspect the side plates and their sealing surfaces. In particular, inspect
the thickness of the metal rim that the side plates are fastened to. Raw
water cooled AT4's can be subject to loss of material if they sat for a
while and oxygen supported corrosion in that area.
