Andy; I liked your article; would you advise pro or con on the cost of using a
carbon fiber whisker pole? Thanks

13x7, 13x6, and 12x6 are common A4 props, assuming you have direct drive.
I use this prop and love it:

I have recently purchased mk1, with missing prop. I have seen several other
models but they have different pitches and sizes. I am looking at Martec
folding props used which I believe were standard.
What is the original spec for this Atomic 4 engine or if you have a newer
better option.

I was surprised on my 1982 C 32 that the threads were not on the bases, but
the stanchions. Long story but I had thought a couple of stanchions had fallen
off when the boat was moved by truck. In the process I found the stanchions
themselves were tapped 10-24 thread.

Agreed on the topping lift, I use a spinnaker halyard since the end of
the whisker pole is farther outboard than the spinnaker pole, slightly
less inward pull on the pole but probably doesn't make too much
difference. The topping lift allows better control of the sail, IMHO,

Here's a short piece I wrote on how to rig and set a pole. It really isn't too
big a chore, if you do it right.

I have both a spin pole and a whisker pole. We use the whisker for main and
jib races, and it is superior for the reasons you stated. We use a topping
lift. We have also used a down haul in heavy stuff (after the chute comes down
due to too much breeze/wave action). As issue we have
The stanchions are loose in the worn sockets of the plastic stanchion bases.
Before I order eight new ones, I'm wondering if anyone has tried filling the
socket with epoxy and either setting the stanchion in the wet epoxy, or letting
the epoxy set and re-drilling for the stanchion?
Thanks,
I have to disagree with the recommendation to just use the spinnaker pole. I
bought a whisker pole because it weighs much less than the spinnaker pole and I
can store it vertically attached at the mast end. I don’t think I could
maneuver the spinnaker pole in place by myself on the unstable
I get not having insurance (maybe). However, the boat in the photos is clearly
not a 36. It is too small, the mainsheet’s in the wrong place, the cockpit is
wrong, the boat has a tiller instead of a wheel, etc. Either those were the
wrong pics or someone’s playing games – and wasting the
Bruce is still at it (sent to my email directly last night). Apparently no
