Thanks to all that replaced with solutions to this problem. While I agree that adding any kind of 'splice' to the middle of such a cable is not a good idea, for my type sailing (NC sounds, close off-shore PHRF racing and boat deliveries) I decided to forego a complete cable replacement and try a 'splice' using the Shakespeare connector that does not require soldering. So for about $30, I ordered 2 of them in case I screw up the first time and will see how it goes. If it proves a bust, I am out little cash and then will go the cable replacement route. Thanks to all who replied--I never knew that such connectors existed so searching via Google would probably be a bust as well--like Rumsfeld famously declared "...there are known unknowns and unknown unknowns.." and the cable splice device fell in the latter category for me!!
