Robin I just purchased an android tablet. Navionics has apps for different areas. I got the HD Marine and lakes for US/Canada. You can download the charts you want for offline use. Also works with or with out gps.
Although I haven’t used it in real time yet I have been armchair sailing for about a month and I am very satisfied.
