A normal engine R & R involves a complaint (often age related), high
oil consumption, low compression, etc. If you don't have a specific
issue with the engine and it is more age related prudence and a
learning opportunity then I would suggest you plan for a full gasket&
seal set and

As a minimum I would suggest the following. All seals, bearings, rings
(hone cylinders). Check the following for wear and correct as required valves
and guides, crank journals, lifters, and camshaft. If you have the A4 I am sure
you have heard on Moyer Marine. They have all partsand are the
Inspect the side plates and their sealing surfaces. In particular, inspect
the thickness of the metal rim that the side plates are fastened to. Raw
water cooled AT4's can be subject to loss of material if they sat for a
while and oxygen supported corrosion in that area.
