Which versions of Windows are you looking at using?
Pre Windows Vista are very different than post. Also server was a bit
different than the client versions.

My reply isn't about the detail, but rather about the principles.
the missing '$' was a mistake in the example given in the mail.
I don't think the problem resides in the snippet not being render
( since in case of syntax errors it dies with cheetah exceptions ) ,
but I'll give what you suggested about un-defined variables a try
