Arrived early before the snow started and put out some seed. Lots of
birds on the ground on the west side. As far as I could tell,
everyone present and accounted for:
Rosy-Finches 40 -50 birds with mostly Gray-crowned Gray-
cheeked(Hepburns), with some Brown-capped and a few
Ann Johnson now has all the 2008 issues of Iowa Bird Life on the IOU Ann
Barker Memorial Library public website. This is the issue with the
Black-tailed Gull sighting at Saylorville Res from 17 Nov to 6 Dec 2007,
cover photo and article pp 40-41. I know some CO birders went over to get
the gull

While sitting here working I noticed a raptor working the hillside. I grabbed
the bins and sure enough, it was an adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK. It has now been
actively hunting the hillside for ~25 minutes. There is also a RED-TAILED HAWK
that has noticed the activity and come down to

I was just on Jack Siler's eBird rarity map
(http://birdingonthe.net/gmaps/eBirdMap.html) and noticed a report of 2 Great
Gray Owls just north of the border near Cheyenne, WY. Of course, who knows how
reliable that report is. Not exactly where I'd expect one to show up.
But it
Went down to the Platte at Florida St. Friday, looking for the
reported Long-tailed Duck. Thought I'd found it, but now that I look
at the photos, I think it's a molting or juvi Pintail. See what you
think. There was a beautiful male Common Mergansers, Hooded
Mergansers, Green-winged Teals,
William Bond took this photo and placed it on his blog. I can see the Northern
Pintail, but what else?
