Though I have seen Black-crowned Night-Herons at Holcim Wetlands since I
began conducting bird surveys there several years ago I have never had any
indication that they were breeding (also none recorded breeding in Fremont
County). This week I found 2 adults and 1 immature Black-crowned

Greetings All,
This bird looks quite typical for a Western Gull, with no sign of GWGU
introgression that I can detect. Telling wymani from the nominate race is
tough, as the changes really are clinal.
The difference from Lesser BB Gull are multiple, as outlined by outers.

We had a beautiful male Calliope Hummingbird visit our feeder (which I just put out yesterday) early this morning. His gorget was really striking. According to eBird, this is an unusual sighting. He has not returned. We had many of them last fall on a previous stay here in Estes Park. Our plac

I've always thought Colorado's birders are great in doing their best to help

I am glad you said thanks to Loch, since I have not. Loch ran to grab his

bird had a yellow orbital ring. This shifted our
Hi Folks,
Just got back from viewing the Western Gull. It was at the swim beach around
3:15 this afternoon. The wind was horrendous, putting up so much sand at one
point that I could not see the gull from the parking area with my scope! It was
eventually forced off of the beach by some kids

Folks,
I have loaded a composite photo showing a Lesser Black-backed Gull and the

nicely illustrate Glenn's great description of this bird. Great find Glenn!

Thanks to Glenn for finding and being careful about the ID. It is just
as easy for a birder to identify a birds as a more common species and

One bit that I haven't heard discussed yet is which kind of Western it is, the
southern wymani or the northern occidentalis. This may or may not be important
when people postulate on where it came from. Did it come up from the Gulf of

I have posted the solution to last week's CFO Photo Quiz (www.cfo-link.org).
For the next few weeks as I gallivant around Colorado atlassing, expect the
solutions to the quiz to be unreliably delayed.

Virginia and All,
"why is the Chatfield bird not a Lesser Black-backed?"
This is a valid question and one I meant to address last night. Just
