Alas, the Fox Sparrow from Thompson Ranch is not a Sooty Fox, or not a pure
one. The weak wingbars would be most unusual for a Sooty Fox, though the rare
individual does show this. The streaking on the back is totally wrong for Sooty

This bird looks like a Sooty Fox Sparrow to me. Or at least it looks like
a number of the Fox Sparrows I saw in Washington a month ago, and does not
look like the Slate-colored Fox Sparrows I've seen in Colorado. Assuming
I'm right, wouldn't this represent the first record of this form f

Kirk H. mentioned a couple of the good birds we saw today. Additionally at
Flagler we observed 2 Harris's Sparrows, a Swamp Sparrow (Kathy Dunning only),
Field Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Lincoln Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow and
White-throated Sparrow. In Lincoln County we saw 4 Golden-cro
Birded with several folks out east today, with the highlights being a
White-eyed Vireo at Flagler Reservoir SWA (south of the lake, near railroad
tracks), and a friendly Fox Sparrow at a private ranch in Lincoln County.

I hope this is an okay thing to post, and not too off-topic. I wanted to
say a very sincere thank you to the birders I met during my summer in
Hayden (near Steamboat) in Colorado. I would especially like to thank Peter

BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER (most likely a 1st fall female) - seen and heard
(infrequent, fairly loud, metallic chip) foraging in American Elm on Frey

sparrow was spotted in about ... 15 seconds!
It was still holding in the area around the "boat launch" area even as another
