Birding friends,
Ever since our successful Appreciation and Clean-up Day we had at Last
Chance Oasis in early November,
we've been eager to go back for Habitat Restoration. Think grass seed
broadcasting, raking,
shrub and tree planting, setting up drip irrigation, togetherness, and most
A small group of us walked the trail along Boulder Creek just north of
Walden Ponds and west of
75th St. at the end of the DFO trip this morning. We were delighted to see
a Ruby-crowned Kinglet flitting
in the bushes. We also saw and heard a pair of C. Dippers in the same area.

There have been about 150 Bohemian Waxwings across the street from my house at
Simpson Ponds SWA on CR 9E in the Cottonwood and Russian Olive along the road.
Very Cool.

I spotted 3 Swainson's Hawks today in different locations in Boulder
County. A sub-adult was sitting on N 63rd, just south of Nelson Road (west
of Longmont). Later, we found a pair sitting in a tree about a mile and a
half east of Niwot on Niwot Road.

A photographer has sent me a couple of pictures of the white crane that
had been reported previously. These pix show some 'non-white' feathers on
the undersides of the wings and some greyish cast on the body of the bird.
Sorry, I don't have one of those photo-sharing accounts that most
I took an arc across eastern Boulder County (and into a bit of Weld County)
today, exploring what the mid-point of March might have in store. I started
at Eldorado Canyon State Park, probably the least birded state park in the
metro area. Well, perhaps for good reason as ECSP was pretty

Dennis Paulson, visiting dignitary from Washington (State that is) and I birded
more reservoirs than we could count. Lesser Canada Geese are everywhere and
everywhere in numbers, whilst Cacklers remain surprisingly scarce. Soon, if
usual holds, all will be gone.
In any case,
Jeff Dawson and I made a long, lonely loop into Northeast Colorado today,
Saturday March 16.
Dryland birding, like the dryland farming practiced in much of the area we
covered, is often unrewarding and this early spring trip was no exception.
