Greetings All
Sorry for not posting through the weekend. Life has been kinda grueling
recently, and I wasn't getting much sleep as was.
Let's start with today.
PREWITT RESERVOIOR
I happily met with Glenn Walbek and Steve Larson along the inlet canal grove at
Prewitt, Reservoir, Washington.
No, I did not see a Ptarmigan, yet I spent 4 hours on Mt Evans and 5 hours in
RMNP seeking out these ptundra pturkeys over the long weekend. It reminds me of
chasing Snowy Owls or Great Grey Owls in MN, you can feel their eyes upon you,
but you cannot see them...But I did see a Pine Marten in th
No dice on the Curlew Sandpiper today at Jackson Lake.
Of note were:
1 American Golden Plover
1 Pectoral Sandpiper
1 Dowitcher
Several Wilson's Phalaropes
Several Lesser Yellowlegs
2 Am. Avocets, already in full winter plumage
Franklin's Gulls
20+ White Pelicans
Scads of Baird's Sandpipers

Yesterday evening I birded near Prospect Reservoir in Weld County. The
Reservoir itself has been drained and is 100% totally dry - not even mud for
shore birds or gulls :(. However to the East of the reservoir along WCR 59 is a
nice grove of Russian Olives and some additional brush and trees.
What a difference a day - and 15 degrees - makes. Back to hot weather and
fewer birds. 20 new today, plus caught again 13 of the many that we banded
yesterday:
Western Wood-pewee 2
Red-eyed Vireo1 (an unusual bird for us, but the 2nd this
year.)
House Wren 4
Yellow Wa
Hi Everyone,
This morning 9/2, I was up early and birded Last Chance from 0530 to 0830.
It was pretty busy. Here's my list:
Eur Collared-Dove
Mourning Dove
Great Horned Owl (3 calling when I arrived)
Common Nighthawk
Western Wood-Pewee (one of which was giving a shortened version of its
I saw this hawk at Fountain Creek nature center this morning, it was small
and I think it is a juvenile Sharp shinned hawk. It was calling a lot
because it was quite unhappy about a great horned owl in its tree!

Hey Craniacs,
I did a quick count of staging Sandhill Cranes in Morgan Bottom just NE of
Hayden and found 407 today. Are they staging just for the 2nd Annual Yampa
Valley Crane Festival next weekend? Tom in the 'Boat

Hi COBirders,
While doing some "preseason" banding at Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso Co side),
and clearing lanes of deep weeds for next week's official start, I've had two
good mornings of migrants.
Highlights today - a Hatch-year OVENBIRD, and a Hatch-year BLUE-HEADED VIREO.
Still working on pic
Today we found several migrants in the town of Penrose, Fremont County. The
best bird was a female Baltimore Oriole that we found along K Street between
4th Street and 5th Street in Penrose. She had bright yellow-orange underparts
where a Bullock's would have been gray.
A female/immature MacGil
And CS Warbler and 4 Ovenbirds and 10+ redstarts this morn
