I checked the eBird map for reports of Sabine's Gulls during the months of
August and September so far this year.
Most states west of Kansas City have a smattering of SABU reports, but
Colorado
has *by far *the most eBird reports of this striking gull this fall. Lucky
us!
Consider reporting all

Viewed at 8:25 from south west end. It flew in from north and took some

Hi
Thanks to Arvind for post about Richard Beidleman.
I was greatly influenced by Beidleman, taking all of his week long field
courses at RMNP year after year and from this gained an approach for learning
ornithology, particularly an appreciation for the 19th century naturalist who
roamed the
Birders,
This is the first morning w/o any hummingbirds in the yard.

It was a birdy morning, below Pueblo Reservoir dam. I first checked all my
sometimes good bushes near the Snakeskin/Cottonwood Picnic Area parking lots
on the south side of the river. This area I saw a Red-naped Sapsucker, a
Cassin's Vireo, a Townsend's Warbler among other birds. I walked
Birders,
I was wrong about the hummers. At least 3 have shown up since my earlier

Gosh,
I should have tried that yesterday when I was at Cherry Creek! Maybe if I
would have posted that that SAGU's weren't there, they would have showed up for

COBirders,
When I first moved to the Colorado Springs area quite a few years ago, I
attended a lecture by Dr. Beidleman about Long's Expedition to the Rocky
Mountains. It remains the most interesting lecture I have heard. There, I
learned about Thomas Say, the Father of Entomology, who found
Richard Beidleman was one of the most extraordinary teachers I ever had. I also
took his classes through the Rocky Mountain Nature Assoiciation and his
teaching changed my life. His enthusiasm was contagious. Everytime he showed us
a new bird in the field he was so excited, as if, it was his
Hi COBirders,
To add to remembrances from Arvind and Bill, I had the pleasure of spending a
whole summer with Dr. Beidleman in 1983 in a 40 hours/week class (10 semester
hours!). We heard all that Bill told, had many close-up experiences with
biology and ecology around Pikes Peak, plus camping
I was able to spend just under an hour scanning the eastern Barr Lake
shores and mudflats from the boat launch, from the path leading out from
the banding station and a bit from just across from the Nature Center.
Although there were plenty of birds, they were in the gull, cormorant,

Cool banding day at Barr - Started the morning with a BLACK-THROATED BLUE
WARBLER (first at the station since 2002), ended with a FOS and perhaps
only Rock Wren, and in between caught our FOS Brewer's Sparrow and
Yellow-rumped Warbler. Banded 44 birds:
Rock Wren 1
House Wren 3
Ruby-crowned
I had an adult Mew Gull hanging out with the Ring-billed and Cal Gulls on
the Swim Beach at Cherry Creek SP tonight. I added a couple of photos on
my flickr site at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/aphelionart/ Only other
birds of note that I found were two juvenile Sabine's Gulls (down from
I searched the Prospect Ponds Natural Area in Fort Collins today (Sept 19)
after seeing a report of a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron on the ABA Rare Bird
Alert and luckily, I found not one, but two of them. I found them in some
cottonwoods at edge of Merganser Pond which is the northern -most pond
