I would never have thought such a tiny and cute bird could be such a ruthless
predator. Just a Wren eat Wren world out there I suppose.

I learned the hard way in IA with my bluebird trails that both House Sparrows
and House Wrens are notorious for killing Eastern Bluebirds and other birds in
nest boxes. If you run a bluebird box trail in a state east of CO (perhaps in
eastern CO also), you have to pull out House Sparrow (not pr

We had a situation happen this spring with this kind of behavior. We were
thrilled to have Red-breasted Nuthatches nesting in one of our boxes here in
Lakewood. I watched the activity as the birds went in and out of the box for
nearly two weeks. One morning, I heard the male calling over and
I'm guessing, competing House Wrens. House Wrens will pierce eggs and evict
tiny babies of ALL species nests near their nest. I guess for less food
completion. If they see a nest box hole occupied by other wrens from their nest
box vantage point, one will win out. Place boxes away from the sight

Hello, Birders.
If you're wondering what a lazuli x indigo bunting hybrid ("lazigo"

CObirders, I'm puzzled. Last month we hung a Wren box and got a tenant almost
immediately. This week for two days I watched a wren bugging and carrying
insects back to the box. Then yesterday I found a wriggling hatchling in death
throws on the ground beneath the box and another hatchling dead a
Hi Trista,
I'd highly recommend eBird to get you started, or to at least point you in
general to specific areas depending on which target birds you are looking
for. This is also a great resource:

Hi All,
My 12 yr. old son and I are Virginia birders coming to CO from 8/07-8/14 for a
week of birding. Since this is our first time in CO, we would like to see as
many of the resident birds as possible. We fly into Denver and will get a
rental car for the week. Any suggestions for good bird
Hi all,
I saw this bird at Kountze Lake in Lakewood, Co., and I wasn't sure what it
was. I thought it looked like a Great Blue Heron, but I've never seen one
that's so solidly light grey before. Also, it's thighs were grey, not reddish,
and it's bill was grey too. Check out my not-so-super photo
Although the primary purpose of a Sunday visit to Florissant was to enjoy
the impressive wildflower display, I always have eyes and ears trained for
birds. While birding was admittedly slow, I did hear the distinctive call
of a SORA while walking the Boulder Creek Trail which parallels a large,

This year has been a wet one in Colorado, attributable to the El Nina
effect, I am told.
So expect to find shorebirds and waterfowl in playas that fill with water
only once in 10 or more years.
I have found this map of Colorado's probable playas quite useful, with its
