Canon City has historically been a marginal area for Dickcissel breeding
with usually no more than 6 to 8 singing male Dickcissels and presumably as
many females. Today I located more than a dozen singing males, most
viewable from public roads in Canon City. I have some good pics, a little
video
Late yesterday afternoon, just before I arrived for another look at the
celebrities, two or three other birders had seen the Tricolored apparently
struggling to free a foot. It appeared to do so, but then was standing on one
leg with wings drooped showing what may have been distressed. On observ
Rebecca LaRouche, and Charlie and Lisa Chase and I noted a Caspian Tern
flying over and out of sight a few times at Walden Ponds early today,
Monday.
Both of the Little Blue Herons were at Cottonwood Marsh, but the Tricolored
Heron was awol.
Rebecca found a Cedar Waxwing on a nest.

I saw this house finch at our bird bath and thought the colors on its face
were unusual. I have occasionally seen yellow house finches but not a mix
of red and yellow like this.
