Hi Larry!
That makes so much sense based on what it looked like...it was the size
that threw me off. I don't think of tanagers as being as big as an
oriole!
So, I looked it up. AllAboutBirds and Audubon describe Bullock's Oriole as
7 to 8.5" and Western Tanager as 6.0 to 7.5". I've got
Hey, all.
Along with all the *western tanagers,* there were *stilt sandpipers* this
rainy Monday, May 20. At Cottonwood Marsh, Walden Ponds, I saw 8. And over
at Prince Lake No. 2, I saw another.

Perhaps not on the same level as the Western Tanager explosion, but in my
last 3 days here in SE Colorado while doing surveys (and birding in between
them), I've noticed a distinct uptick in Blue Grosbeaks. In fact I can't
remember ever coming across them so frequently virtually everywhere I go. I
Hi Ann,
Nice pictures! You may have heard there’s also a Western Tanager palooza going
on. One of them who hasn’t quite gotten dressed for spring yet decided your
feeder was better. His head will become redder soon!

There are currently 80+ Wilson's Phalarope busily feeding on the surface at
Lagerman Reservoir in Longmont - Boulder County. I'm guessing they are
migrants forced down by today's weather. Other interesting visitors include

On a tip from Frank Farrell, I went over to Marston Rez and saw at least 22
sanderlings plus a smattering of other shorebirds. Swallows abound as well.

Hey again, COBIrders,
I was ready for a blow-out this morning, at Clear Spring Ranch, but that didn’t
materialize. Rain did, about 9:30. But before that, it was epic. Branson P.
suggested with the two rare warblers at Chico Basin early this morning that
today might be a fallout day. It was
I just had a male Western Tanager here in central Greeley, Weld County. He
stopped by the suet and was in a Linden Tree that is just leafing out.

Hi all
We birded from 0630 to 1530, and in general, constrained by Nunn, Keota,
north Greeley and Hwy 85 boundaries on Saturday. As I mentioned earlier we
finished with 103 species on Saturday. The running joke on Saturday was
finding the "elusive" ;-) American Wigeon ... we eventually got the
Everyone,
Thanks for your replies about this bird being a Summer Tanager. The fun
part is I only saw it because I had gotten close to a tree to get a picture
of a large swarm of bees.in it.

Hi, y'all:
We've had a tanager or two, 4-5 miles from the foothills, every migration
season, but this year, it was our neighbor whose new (European) honeybees were
being visited by a new predator: a half dozen Western Tanagers gobbling bees
like popcorn. Hard to know how to react in this
It does seem that the Hummingbird Highway got routed here overnight. Instead
of 2-3 hummers at our two feeders, we have more than 10, far exceeding any
previous count. Possibly a couple black- chins in the mix.

Hey Bill,
I really think that looks a lot like a Female Summer Tanager ... any one else
concur?? I mean it would be out of place but still.

As Brandon has already noted, conditions today could be great for
migration. It is the right time of year, and the wind conditions are right.

Bill et al,
I think this is a Summer Tanager mainly due to the bill and inconsistent
color from the crown to the tail. The wings don't look dark enough to be a
Scarlet.
