CO birders :
There is an excellent article by David Sibley on Sandwich Tern identification
in North American Birds volume 74 number 1 2023 which identifies the Manitou
Lake bird as being of the European subspecies Thalasseus
sandvincensis.Currently AOU and Clements do not split Sandwich Tern in
My Tarryall BBS route (Park County ) was also well down in species this year 54
versus the usual 65 to 68 .Waterbirds , shorebirds were about normal , but
missing were many ponderosa , spice/ fir species .So no sapsuckers,Hammond’s
flycatcher , Townsends Solitaire , Cassin’s Finch ,Evening Gros
Sad news indeed , we will miss him. Joe adopted me when I first arrived in
Colorado in 2006 and quickly got me involved with CFO , DFO and the birding
community and enjoyed many birding trips with him throughout Colorado as well
as sharing rooms on birding trips to Sri-Lanka , Ecuador and Boli
