Our wild tour of northern Colorado is coming to a close. Arrived here at
Estes on Thursday but flew to San Francisco over weekend and returned
Monday night. Spring is coming along, but still a dearth of passerines in
the mountains. On hike today to Fern Lake in RMNP found Yellow-rumped

Completing three days on the west side of the Front Range we realize this
was not a good area to look for pigmy owls or flams. Still, we enjoyed the
scenery and birds here. Signs of spring are few, but White-crowned
Sparrow, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Cassin’s Finches, American Robin, and,
of
Montrose was fun, but we moved on yesterday to Island Acres State Park
campground for an easy shot at the Grand Mesa. Arriving yesterday we drove
up route 65 to the top. It was 85 degrees and sunny when we left the
Colorado River. Arriving at 10,000 feet elevation we scouted pull-off

Descending from Blue Mesa Reservoir to Montrose we encountered a greening
landscape suggesting that spring is on its way. Migrants are filtering in
and we expect a swarm this weekend. Still, we retreated from a snowshoe
hike at Little Molas Lake today in a snowstorm to avoid the possibility
We PA Birders migrated from Lamar (finding Broad-winged Hawk in College
Woods on May 2) and sweeping snow from our slide covers as we reeled them
in. Pike’s Peak was obscured by cloud but we sailed clear with RV to
campground west of Gunnison.

On this ugly day we PA birders stayed in mostly but checked a few town
places this afternoon. Behind pallets at Walmart was a flock of Chipping
Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, and Brewer's Sparrow with a single *Palm
Warbler*. At the Fairmount Cemetery a *Lazuli Bunting* added color to a
flock
PA birders touring CO, we explored the river valley, the John Martin Dam
area, Bent's Old Fort, and Fort Lyon areas yesterday ahead of today's
storm. Valley produced Gambel's White-crowned Sparrows and a flock of male
