They hang out in my hen house along with various other sparrows and finches.
There is a gap above the door which allows them to come and go. Between the
heat from the hens and the heat lamp, which I have going right now, they are
nice and warm. I haven't seen them eating the chicken feed, but th

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. The consensus is that it is an
immature, probably female, Sharp-shinned Hawk. It is too small to be a Coopers
and a bit larger than a Kestrel.
Thanks so much!

A friend of mine reported on Facebook, along with a video that a flock of
Sandhill Cranes were flying over Niwot about noon today.
Isn't this late for them? I saw the video and it does appear that they are
Sandhills.

the same one that has been hanging around my place for a few weeks now.

I have a small flock of Yellow headed-blackbirds on the southeast shore of

These are the first that I have observed at the lake in probably 30 years. They

Right now we have Blue Jays, Chickadees, Juncos, Goldfinches, House Finches,
House Sparrows, Downey Woodpeckers, and Nuthatches, visiting the feeders. I
filled them a few hours ago, and it looks like I am going to need to refill
them again soon.

My guess is the same. There is another Red-tailed Hawk nest a few trees away.
Someone else suggested an Osprey but I really don’t think so, it is too far
from water. The nearest reliable water/pond/lake is over a mile away, and would
they nest that close to a red-tailed hawk nest? I wish I could

I've taken down all my feeders except the suet and thistle ones because large
flocks of red winged blackbirds were taking over, chasing all the other birds
away. However, I'm really enjoying the small flocks of Goldfinches. The males
are in full breeding color now. Some other species visiting ar
