Yesterday, mid-morning, while we were skiing in Lory State Park near Fort Collins, we were surrounded by hundreds of rosy finches. We were in a burned area in the valley and they were working the grasses and the burned mountain mahogany. We stood stock still to hear and feel all these birds around us. It was comical as several would land on the top of a stalk of grass and then swing down to the ground as though they were playing. It was magical and they didn't seem bothered by us at all. We were the only 2 people around. As we skied further up the valley, several more groups of rosy finches would appear. I don't think it was all the same group as the same thing happened when we skied back down the valley. There were also flocks of juncos and some tree sparrows mixed in with the rosy finches. Each flock of finches was maybe 2-300 each. We also saw one solitaire, several magpies, and a kestrel.
