Hello, all. In my opinion, one of the least-appreciated bird ID problems in the ABA Area is the rosy-finch complex. Okay, we in Colorado know all about it. But, in general, the rosy-finches have been neglected. For example, in the latest edition (no. 5) of the National Geographic Guide, there is more verbiage on geographic variation in the Black Sea races of the Yellow-legged Gull (casual in the ABA Area) than there is for the entire Black Rosy-Finch account! I, personally, have been completely stymied by many of the rosy-finches (mainly juvenile female Brown-caps?) that I see in the winter at Allenspark, Boulder County. Gulls, peeps, and empids are comparatively easy. And, now, there's a great new article on Black Rosy-Finch ID, in the Nov. 2009 issue of Birding. The author is Stephen Fettig, who bands rosy-finches in the winter at Sandia Crest, New Mexico (that's their equivalent of our Allenspark). And a little birdie tells me Steve is working on a longer piece for Birding, to cover all the "species" of rosy-finches. (By the way, some of Bill Schmoker's bird photos appear in Steve's article in the Nov. 2009 Birding.) -------------------------------
