I have been so pleased to have two male and at least one female Black-Chinned Hummingbird at my feeder in west Longmont! They add a wonderful variety of Rufous and Broad-tails that are my normal summer visitors.
Last Saturday, a Red-tail Hawk landed in my neighbors' tree behind my house. These are very tiny lots, so the big bird was very awkward in the dense maple branches. I was alerted to its presence by the constant chatter of 3 young House Wrens and their mother and all of the hummers. The latter kept buzzing the tree, trying to get a closer look at the intruder. The hawk then flew to my next-door neighbors' roof and sat there for an hour. All 3 species of hummers spent the next hour hovering 3-4 feet away from the hawk. The Rufous were the most agitated of course, and spent that elevated adrenaline chasing everyone else around!
