Kara Carragher (KC), Bill Maynard (BM), John Drummond (JD), and I (BKP) birded Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) in Pueblo and El Paso Counties today. Here are the highlights, hopefully I don't forget anything, if I do, hopefully the others will let you know.
Pueblo County: SCARLET TANAGER - 1 female at Rose Pond (KC, BM, BKP) -- photographed Northern Parula - 1 female at Rose Pond (JD) Northern Waterthrush - 2 at Rose Pond Golden-crowned Kinglet - 1 at Rose Pond Magnolia Warbler - 1 male (found by KC, seen by all), 1 female at Headquarters area (BKP, JD) No sign of the Arctic Tern or most of the shorebirds that were around yesterday. El Paso County: PHILADELPHIA VIREO - 1 singing 8am at banding station, and found again around 230pm (all observers) -- photographed PROTHONOTARY WARBLER - 1 male at banding station (all observers) -- photographed Magnolia Warbler - 1 male at banding station (all observers, found by KC) Black-throated Green Warbler - 1 singing male at banding station (JD) Nashville Warbler - 1 at banding station (JD) Veery - 2 at banding station (all observers) Blackpoll Warbler - 1 singing male at the Eagle Grove area (BKP, KC, BM) Northern Waterthrush - 1 near Big Willow, near banding station (KC, BM, BKP) Ovenbird - 1 singing at banding station (all observers) American Redstart - 2 (1 singing) at banding station (all observers) Other warblers around today were: Yellow, Virginia's, Yellow-rumped, Wilson's, MacGillivray's, Common Yellowthroat, and Yellow-breasted Chat. This is a group total of 16 species of warblers. There were Warbling and Plumbeous Vireos, and lots of thrush, Swainson's mostly, with a few Hermit, no luck with a Gray-cheeked. We identified a few empidonax, singing Least and Willow, also Dusky and maybe Hammond's. Lots of migrants and breeding birds around still.
