The 67th Fort Collins CBC was held December 14th, a beautiful day, with 85
species seen on count day and an additional 4 during count week. The cold
snap just prior to the count seemed to reduce the number of species seen,
but probably accounted for some unusually high numbers for some species.
Notable birds count day included a Horned Grebe and Brown Thrasher. High
counts included 27,500 Canada Geese (prior high 20,000), 58 Rough-legged
Hawks (28), 108 Red-tailed Hawks (88) with 2 Harlan's (also a new high from
1), 32 Virginia Rails (21), 24 Great Horned Owls (17), 124 Steller's Jay
(112), and 49 Common Ravens (40). Some species likely came from the north,
but some from higher elevations. Noticeably lacking were Redhead, Lesser
Scaup, Eastern Screech-Owl, and grackles, (and the Northern Cardinal seen
last on December 10th in Laporte. It was a fun day for the 67
participants, divided into 17 groups, and the 9 feeder watchers. I really
appreciate everyone's effort that participated and hope to see them next
year! I would also like to thank the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory for
allowing us to have a compilation dinner in their conference room; we had a
good turn-out and very comfortable chairs! THANKS,

Tom Hall
