As the sun went down on Friday, gulls accumulated on the ice shelf forming at
the Lake Loveland swim beach in Loveland, CO. In addition to about 300
Ring-billed Gulls, I counted:
Lesser Black-backed Gull-6 adults
Herring Gull -50 or so
I was looking into the sun, so I couldn't really study the
I hung out at Lake Loveland hoping to refind the possible Mew Gull. The flock
of 75 gulls on the mud in the northwest lagoon never fully materialized -
roughly 45 gulls showed up tonight - all Ring-billed Gulls . Again they took
off about 8 pm towards a communal roost and this time I followed

During the time that several others and myself spent searching for the
possible Western Gull, we never refound the bird seen last night. Last
night there was only one gull with a black back, while tonight there were 3
Lesser Black-backed Gulls. I will keep looking though over the
The gull variety at Lake Loveland this afternoon was impressive. Many of the
larger-species gulls began to fly off the ice at the northwest corner shortly
after 3 pm, in the direction of Carter Lake, where I suspect they are roosting
every night. Counts were as follows:
Ring-billed Gull – 280
