On Friday, May 15, I stopped briefly at Last Chance, CO. while on my way to
another destination. Thought I'd see more variety and not much was there. Two
Orchard Orioles[1, ad. male, and 1, first year male], were a pretty sight. 1,
Northern Waterthrush, was at the edge of the sunken pond. One Br
Hail covering the road near Byers early this morning provided evidence of
the real weather overnight in eastern Colorado. This weather encouraged
quite a few migrants to take a break from their northward journey. Last
Chance had mostly usual suspects, but a soggy Townsend's Warbler in one of
I took the long way back from Limon to pass through the famed migrant trap.
In spite of the place buzzing with bird activity, there were few birds of note.

I made a quick stop at Last Chance today [at the intersection of highway 71 and
highway 36]. It was pretty, pretty, slow, with gale force winds. This I'm sure
added to the situation. 1, immature Swamp Sparrow. This bird acted as if I was

I made it out to Last Chance at 0650 this morning 10/13. As dawn broke,
there was a small peak of activity, including a montane Fox Sparrow at the
pond and a White-throated Sparrow behind the hotel. By 0800 there were lots

This morning at Last Chance was spectacular! Mark Chavez and I were there for
about 3 hours, starting around 8:30am. There were large numbers of birds
around the pond area and adjacent draws (SW quadrant of the intersection), as
well as good numbers of birds across the street in the NE quadran

Today at Last Chance:
Unusual: Red-eyed Vireo, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Veery, Orchard Oriole (M &
F), Bullock's Oriole (M & F, courting), Northern Mockingbird (youngster).
Usual: Yellow Warbler, Brown Thrasher, Western Kingbird, Common Grackle,
American Robin, House Finch, House Sparrow, Mourning

I got to spend about 45 min at Last Chance this morning before joining the
car club at High Plains Raceway. There is quite a bit of water in the pond
and near the bridge. The best bird was a Barn Owl, being harassed by just
about everything. Also:

Veery
Swainson's Thru
Just an fyi about Last Chance.although there was nothing rare last night
there was lots of activity on the pond side. I had:
25 orange-crowned Warblers
25-30 Yellow-rumped Warblers mixed equally between Audubon's and Myrtle's)
1 Green-tailed Towhee
Numerous Lincoln's Sparrows
1 Clay-colored S
After striking out at Belmar in the snow I decided to head out to Last Chance.
There was a fair amount of migrants moving through including at least two
Tennessee Warblers. I'm pretty sure I had three but maybe one got behind me.
