Just a very quick note that I returned at 6:50 am to Holcim Wetlands where I found Rich Miller who had been there since the crack of dawn. He was watching a juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron. That made me happy as it may confirm breeding there for this species (have to look that up) which I had hoped was happening when I saw the adult and immature Black-Crowned Night-Herons staying in this area this spring. There was also an adult bird with the juvenile who were engaged in fishing at the edge of the open water.
Rich told me he had already seen the Least Bittern fly this morning so I walked down towards the area where he had seen it and I had photographed it earlier. After about 45 minutes the Least Bittern flew up and to another part of the cattails. I continued watching and subsequently refound it 40-50 feet from where I saw it fly in (so it apparently had walked over the cattails or made short flights I didn't see to get there). I watched it off and on for a total of a few minutes as it assumed the hunting position, stood motionless, walked a little, made 2 short flights. I got some fairly good photos but I haven't had time to edit and upload them to my blog as I am scheduled for a surgical procedure tomorrow afternoon and had too many things to get done. I will likely not be able to do anything with them for a few days or answer emails as I have to go to bed now and will be restricted for a few days, but will do as soon as I can.
