Dave Leatherman emailed me regarding the photos of the Lewis's Woodpecker I
posted showing a large whitish piece of something it was bringing to feed
it's nestlings. I thought this was some type of insect or larvae but Dave
believes it might be bread. It is certainly feasible that the adult
appropriated some white bread as the nest site is about a quarter mile from
2 residences and there are farmworkers working closer who might have dropped
bread that a busy parent woodpecker thought was an easy pick for dinner for
it's nestlings (like similar 'fast food' it has questionable nutritional
value). I have uploaded two more photos onto my
BirdsAndNature<http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com>showing this food
that can be viewed very close up. I also uploaded two
photos that provide good views of the specialized tail feathers of this
woodpecker.
