Arapahoe County:
--On Nov 6 the Kennedys were surprised and delighted to find a "way out of
place" American Dipper where a bike path goes along a small tributary of Cherry
Creek, Piney Creek, near the Orchard Road and Parker Road intersection. There
are very few records of this bird that far east of the foothills. The oriental
record setter was one at Julesberg in 1983, according to Bob and Bob. It was
found again by Stecher on the 7th, at dusk, under the Parker Road bridge.
--A Lesser Black-backed Gull was reported by Stecher at Cherry Creek far out
from the marina towards the dam on November 8.
--A juv BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was reported by Walbek on the south side of
Cherry Creek Reservoir on November 10.
Bent:
--On Nov 8 Leatherman reported a Harris's Sparrow and Winter Wren, the latter
under the bridge near a huge heaped up pile of tree debris. He describes the
site as: "Arkansas River west of Lamar just north of place name of Prowers
(Bent)." The birds were seen during his Nov 6-8 trip. Prowers is about 7
miles west of Lamar on Olive Street which turns into CR HH. The bridge over
the Arkansas River is about 1 mile north of CR HH on CR 34.5.
Boulder County:
--Birchmeier announced that there were 2 Pacific Loons on Lagerman Reservoir on
Nov 5.
--Schmoker espied a Pacific Loon on Boulder Reservoir on Nov 5.
--On Nov 6 there was a Winter Wren near the spillway of the main pond at Golden
Ponds near Longmont, reported by Severs.
--Kaempfer and Vanderpool noted an adult and an immature Tundra Swan at
Lagerman on Nov 7 and Severs
saw them fly over his vehicle heading toward Boulder Reservoir later that
morning. Zilly saw one Tundra Swan
on the north shore of McIntosh Reservoir near Longmont at noon on Nov 7.
--Gent spotted 2 female/immature Black Scoters on Baseline Reservoir on 11/7.
--2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (1st winter, ad) were reported by Nunes at
Baseline Reservoir on November 9.
--A Winter Wren was heard by Severs on the Boulder Creek Path west of 75th St
on November 10.
Custer County:
--On Nov 6 Rich Miller found a Snow Bunting north of Wetmore along the
Custer-Fremont County line. The intersection there is County Roads 298 and
297. He also found a Palm Warbler along Hardscrabble Creek across from the
Wetmore Community Center. A search party on Nov 7 failed to find either of
these goodies.
Douglas County:
--Schmoker noticed a Lesser Black-backed Gull at the Plum Creek delta at
Chatfield Reservoir on Nov 6.
El Paso County:
--Luck banded two more Swamp Sparrows at Clear Springs Ranch on 11/7.
Fremont County:
--Moss also reports another female Williamson's Sapsucker at Centennial Park in
Canon City. Other locales where Williamson's Sapsuckers have been located in
"The Climate Capital of Colorado" include Lakeside Cemetery and Rouse Park. Two
male Williamson's Sapsuckers were at Lakeside Cemetery on Nov 6.
Douglas/Jefferson Counties:
--2 Red-throated Loons (1 ad, 1 juv) were reported by Kellner at Chatfield on
November 10. They were between the handicapped fisherman's access and dam
outlet tower.
Huerfano County:
--The Neldners saw and photographed a female Eastern Towhee on Nov 6. It was
still there on the 8th. It was joined by a NORTHERN PARULA on the 8th!. This is
a classic example of the "Patagonia Picnic" effect. Birders are invited to
check out this hotspot at 151 County Road 359 in La Veta. The Nelders
reported that EASTERN TOWHEE was seen again on November 9 and 10.
--On Nov 4 Silverman and Percival found a Red-necked Grebe and a Pacific Loon
at Lathrop State Park (they were still there on Nov 7) and at Horseshoe Lake
were a Surf Scoter and a Winter Wren.
Jefferson County:
-- A Golden-crowned Sparrow continued at the Red Rocks Trading Post through Nov
7. A White-throated Sparrow was last seen there in late October and seen again
Nov 7.
--A CURVE-BILLED THRASHER was found by Chavez on October 27 at the Red Rocks
Trading Post and has been seen daily through Nov 9.
Sanders reported the thrasher on November 9.
--The Schmokers, pere & fils, saw a Northern Goshawk and a Northern Shrike at
Red Rocks on Nov 6, so a visit there can be worthwhile even if one does not see
each of the sparrows and the thrasher.
-- Semo and Erthal independently found a Tundra Swan on Standley Lake in
northern Jeffco. It was found Nov 5 and was independently not seen on Nov 6.
--About 1:15 on Nov 8 Bob Andrews, Michael Kiessig, and Mike Henwood found a
"Stub-tailed" Wren, as a PACIFIC WREN, in the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt. "It was
south of the foot bridge, near the downed logs along the little creek below the
stairs coming down from the subdivision above. This is on the south side of
Clear Creek and almost directly south of the parking lot in the Wheat Ridge
Greenbelt off of 44th." (This area used to be known as the Tree Bridge Trail).
Their ID was PACIFIC WREN "because of the dark color and rapid call notes." The
call sounded "exactly like the Pacific Wren call on Stokes." (pers com) This
would be the first Jeffco record if accepted & one of a few Colorado records.
If someone can get photos and/or tape recordings of the wren, it would be most
helpful. The wren was heard on November 9 but not seen by several birders.
Lake County:
--On Nov 6 Kalmach reports 3 TRUMPETER SWANS at the extreme western end of Twin
Lakes.
Larimer County:
--On Nov 4 Dunning detected 3 Three-toed Woodpeckers in Rocky Mountain Park
near the intersection of the Lawn Lake Trail and the Ypsilon Trail. That site
is about 1.3 miles above the Lawn Lake Trailhead.
--Fossil Creek hosted a male Eurasian Wigeon at the far west side (seen again
on Nov 6) and 2 Black Scoters on Nov 5, (not seen on Nov 6), discovered by
Bruening. Wild noted a Surf Scoter there on Nov 5 and a Pacific Loon on Nov 6.
At Horseshoe Lake Wild had a Red-necked Grebe, at Boyd Lake a Pacific Loon and
at Tinmath Reservoir, four adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls and a Mew Gull on
Nov 6.
Logan/Sedgwick:
On Nov 8 Sanders ID'd all five of Colorado's most expected geese species at
Jumbo Reservoir.
Mesa County:
--Arnold found a DUNLIN in Grand Junction. The site was at Green Heron Pond,
near the Blue Heron trail on the north bank of the Colorado River on Nov 6.
--Woodward found another DUNLIN in Mesa County at Highline Lake State Park on
Nov 6.
Moffatt:
--McConnell reported a late Sabine's Gull at Perch Pond on Highway 13 south of
Craig on Nov 6.
--Luke reports 4 Tundra Swans at the CMS Pond off 1st street in Craig on Nov 6
and continuing on November 10.
Park County:
--At Spinney Mountain Reservoir Drummond saw a Pacific Loon on Nov 2. Beatty
found 5 distant swans, of unknown species, at Spinney on the 7th, but only
hours later they were not there. Drummond found 4 Surf Scoters at Eleven Mile
Reservoir on Nov 2; Beatty found 3 Surf Scoters and a Black Scoter there on Nov
7.
Prowers County:
--Leatherman found a White-throated Sparrow in the Lamar Community College
woods during his Nov 6-8 southeast trip.
--A f eastern Nashville Warbler, m Northern Cardinal and Red Fox Sparrow were
reported by Leatherman at Lamar Community College woods on November 9.
Pueblo County:
-- Drummond found an immature (hatch year) male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in
Pueblo City Park, in the NE corner and east of the Duck Pond on Nov 3. Petersen
saw two YB Sapsuckers there on Nov 7. Percival saw it again with a NASHVILLE
WARBLER. That warbler was seen again on Nov 8 in an insect-infested oak tree
near the Ravine in the eastern end of Pueblo City Park, along with a swirl of
more common birds. The sapsuckers were not seen on the 8th.
--Wild found a Red-necked Grebe at Pueblo Reservoir off the West Fishing Road
on Nov 8.
