Ross's Goose (*Larimer) Swan species, probably Tundra Swan (Park) Surf Scoter (Pueblo) Black Scoter (Pueblo) Barrow's Goldeneye (*Larimer) Pacific Loon (*Douglas) Merlin (Logan) Lesser Black-backed Gull (*Larimer) White-winged Dove (Las Animas) INCA DOVE (*Montrose) Chihuahuan Raven (Larimer) Curve-billed Thrasher (Jefferson) Hooded Warbler (*Weld) Swamp Sparrow (Logan) White-throated Sparrow (Jefferson) Golden-crowned Sparrow (Jefferson) Douglas County: -- Walbek found a Pacific Loon at "Rampart" Reservoir on the 29th. The formal name for this Reservoir is "Aurora-Rampart Range Reservoir" (but it is NOT in Aurora), and it is located near the entrance of Roxborough State Park, which is south of Chatfield Reservoir. From the corner of Titan Road and North Roxborough Park Road, go south on North Roxborough Park Road, continuing as it bends to the west. Take the next left onto a little road called Roxborough Drive. Go south a short distance to where you can scan for the loon. Jefferson County: -- A Golden-crowned Sparrow continues at the Red Rocks, as does a White-throated Sparrow, both seen on October 28th. --A CURVE-BILLED THRASHER, most rare in Jefferson County, was found by Chavez on October 27 at the Red Rocks Trading Post, then seen again by several observers throughout the day on October 28. Each of the birds can be under either of the two feeders or in nearby bushes. Patience is required, as some time can go by between appearances. The best viewing site is the Trading Post balcony so as not to disturb them. Larimer County: -- Wild saw a CHIHUAHUAN RAVEN, rare in Larimer, fly over Tinmath Reservoir on October 27. -- Leatherman birded at Tinmath Reservoir on 10/29, where among other birds he found a Ross's Goose, Barrow's Goldeneye and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. Access to Tinmath is from CR 40 about a mile west of the Larimer/Weld County Line. Go north from CR 40 into a large parking lot and scan from there or a little east. Las Animas County: -- In Trinidad Pat Snider saw a White-winged Dove on October 25 in her yard at 1200 Santa Fe Trail, which is at the corner of Jefferson and Santa Fe Trail. Birders are welcome to comb the neighborhood in search of the dove. Logan County: -- Tina Jones found a Swamp Sparrow near the trail below the east end of the dam at Prewitt Reservoir on October 24th. It was seen at the edge of a cattail marsh. On October 24th she also saw at least two Merlins (Prairie) along Road 25, just north of Prewitt Reservoir. Montrose County: -- Brenda Wright posted exciting news - the first West Slope record for an INCA DOVE, at her feeder in Nucla at 233 East Fifth Avenue on October 28. The dove was not seen on October 29. Park County: -- John Drummond checked three Park County Reservoirs on October 28, turning up two, distant, sleeping swans, probably Tundra Swans, at Antero Reservoir. There is little ice at these sites so far. A scope is essential. Scoters have yet to arrive, but are expected. Pueblo County: -- Percival reports two female plumage Surf Scoters and one female plumage Black Scoter at Pueblo Reservoir off the Sailboard Launching area on October 28. Weld County: --Pauli Smith saw TWO MALE HOODED WARBLERS feeding in a Russian Olive in her yard in the Highland Lake/Mead area on October 29. They allowed close approach. Details of the field marks were provided during a follow-up contact. Pauli Smith has photographed this handsome warbler in her yard in the past. This is a late date, but there are records of this warbler into late November. DFO field trips for the weekend: Saturday, October 30: The DFO field trip is to McCabe Meadows Park, formerly known as Parker Regional Park. The leader is Buzz Schaumberg (303) 699-1721. Meet Buzz at 0730 at the Nature Center. To get there from the Main Street intersection in Parker, go south on Parker Road (CO83) for 1.2 miles, then turn right on Indian Pipe Lane to a parking lot of the right. This will be a half day trip. Please call Buzz if you plan to go. Sunday, October 31: The DFO trip is to the Carson Nature Center and South Platte Park, led by Mary Keithler (303) 771-1421. Meet at 0800 for a half day trip. Lunch is optional. Halloween costume is optional. It's Halloween so let's see what can be scared up. The nature center is north of Mineral Avenue, west of Santa Fe Drive, behind the Aspen Grove Shopping Center. Please call Mary if you plan to go.
