Birders,

The Snowy Owl at John Martin Reservoir was much more cooperative today. I saw it numerous times while working between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. With better looks, I think it's an immature female. Today, it liked sitting atop rocky outcrops on the north side of the lake about 1 1/2 miles west of Overlook Point. I would ask that birders be considerate of the stress the bird might be under, and do viewing from vehicles instead of walking, and settling for distant views instead of close views. This particular bird does not allow close approach, maybe a sign that it's relatively healthy.

Many people got to observe the bird today, and the only time it flushed was when a piece of heavy equipment shook the ground when it came within 1/4 mile of the rock outcrop initially favored by the bird.
