I spotted a VERY dark buteo along County Line Road between Jay Rd and Erie
Parkway at about noon today. It flew up from the grasses about 30 ft west
of County Line and took off to the south. The bird was so dark-colored that
I briefly thought it was a Raven. It was bigger than a Raven with a
definite buteo head and light-colored (yellowish) raptor-shaped beak. I did
not get a good look at the trailing edge, underside of its wings although
leading edge underside was very dark. Upper side of body, wings, and tail
very dark. No sign of red on or near the tail. I was driving in traffic
with cyclists on the road so couldn't pull a quick U-turn to follow it. By
the time I could pull off the road I'd completely lost sight of it. I'm
going to try to resight it but don't think the odds are too great.

Has anyone else seen this bird and ID-ed it? Please e-mail me - I'd love to
know what it was.

Thanks!
