Hello, Birders.

Nathan Pieplow and I had a nice time this morning, Saturday, Sept. 5th, with 8
participants in the ABA's workshop on "Frontiers of Field Ornithology:
Nocturnal Migration in the West."

We started in the dark at Walden Ponds, Boulder County, where nocturnal
migration was slow but steady. In the perfectly calm night sky, we heard
several Wilson's Warblers; although seemingly high up, their calls were nice
and clear. We also heard some Chipping Sparrows, presumed Brewer's Sparrows,
and presumed Western Tanagers. Plus, although we didn't hear them, Nathan may
have recorded two MacGillivray's Warbler flight calls (see below).

We saw a fair number of birds "on the ground" after daybreak, among them Green
Heron and American Redstart. There was a bit of an autumnal flavor to the
birdlife at Walden: 1 Orange-crowned Warbler, 2 Audubon's Warblers, 1
Green-tailed Towhee, and 1 Lincoln's Sparrow. Other stuff out there: 11 Wood
Ducks, 2 Snowy Egrets, 2 Black-crowned Night-Herons, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 2
Wilson's Snipes, 2 hummingbirds, 3 Western Wood-Pewees, 3 Western
Warbling-Vireos (all 3 singing!), 3 Gray Catbirds, 1 Yellow Warbler, and 3
Brewer's Sparrows.

After breakfast, Nathan downloaded for us the sonograms and audio of some of
the nocturnal migrants we heard. It was neat to "see" the nocturnal flight
calls of both "typical" and variant Wilson's Warblers. Also, Nathan recorded
two faint flight calls that may have been MacGillivray's Warblers; they might
also have been Vesper Sparrows; or they might have been something different.
Still trying to figure out the flight call of MacGillivray's Warbler.

Thanks to all for a nice day (and night) afield.
