I found a Loggerhead Shrike at Running Deer Natural Area in Fort Collins
today ~4:30pm. The bird was repeatedly visiting a tree next to the trail
that connects the Colorado Visitors Center off Prospect Rd near I-25 to the
rest of the Running Deer/Cottonwood Hollow trails. It's basically the only
An adult Northern Shrike was seen well on power lines in southern
Lincoln County during a DFO field trip on October 12. An Aiken
field trip only two days earlier found a Loggerhead Shrike near there.
Changing of the guard, I suppose.

As I was looking out my back window at the new fallen snow and the foothills there came a flash of wings across the yard. A shrike had zipped in and grabbed a bird on the bush. I have seen the "butcher birds" meal remains on fence wire but have never witnessed the catch. Cool!Jennifer HyypioLittle
Hi all,
There has been a Northern Shrike in our yard for that past few days, it has
been chasing juncos. hasn't caught any yet, but he/she doesn't seem to want to
give up.
Also the owl banding is doing well, we have caught 42 saw-whets so far.
Slightly higher than the 26 that we caught last ye
Hi all,
This evening I saw a Northern Shrike. It appears a bit late for Northern
Shrikes to be in the area, and possibly in the state.
Is anyone else still seeing Northern Shrikes around?
In the past, Northern Shrikes have moved out of the area by the middle of March.

Spring migration for Loggerhead Shrikes will begin soon. I'm looking for
peak migration dates for shrikes in northeast Colorado (Phillips,
Sedgewick and Yuma counties). Are there any eyes out there?
Thanks -
Susan Craig
