TextView cannot Use Selection for Find

I have a window with an NSTextView (inside a ScrollView). Everything works as expected, but when I select some text and do command-e it just beeps. Same for Find Next and Find Previous. (Edit → Find → has these commands grayed out). Using Find Bar or Find Panel makes no difference. Making it
